Background Checks at Lighthouse

What Background Checks Are

A background check is a screening process that helps verify a person's history. Lighthouse uses background checks as one of several measures to ensure that the people serving in staff roles are trustworthy community members.

Background checks are run on staff applicants as part of the hiring process. They may also be renewed periodically for existing staff members to maintain current records.

Why We Do This

The safety of our community members -- especially younger ones -- is a priority. Background checks are one way we hold ourselves accountable and give members, parents, and guardians confidence that the people running this community have been appropriately vetted.

Lighthouse takes its responsibility to be a safe, family-friendly community seriously. Background checks are one piece of that commitment, alongside our community rules, moderation practices, and parent portal.

How the Process Works

When a staff application reaches the Background Check stage, the review team coordinates the screening through a third-party service. The result is recorded and kept on file as part of the applicant's staff record.

An application can only advance to approval once a background check record has been completed. Staff reviewers can see the check status and history; applicants can view their own records on their profile page.

For Parents and Guardians

We understand that parents want to know who is interacting with their children online. Background checks are part of how Lighthouse vets its volunteer staff. If you have questions about our safety practices, you're welcome to reach out via a support ticket.
